BMK Pharma has broken ground on a significant pharmaceutical manufacturing project in Allen, marking a substantial investment in the local economy. The company is developing a facility that will integrate sterile drug manufacturing, pharmaceutical development, and contract manufacturing services into a single location. This new operation is projected to generate more than 100 specialized jobs for the community.
The project, valued at approximately $50 million, is situated near the intersection of Exchange Parkway and U.S. Highway 75. Construction is already underway at the site, with the company targeting a completion date in the summer of 2027. Once fully operational, the facility will serve as a production center for healthcare providers while also offering development and manufacturing support to other pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms.
Dr. Jay Bhaumik, the founder of BMK Pharma, stated that the company chose Allen due to the significant opportunities the city presents. In an official statement, Bhaumik noted that Allen is set to become a key location for the company's operations, expressing enthusiasm for continued investment in the area.
The Allen site will function as a 503B outsourcing facility, a designation that allows for the production of compounded medications in large batches for hospitals, clinics, and other medical institutions. These facilities operate under the oversight of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and must adhere to current Good Manufacturing Practices. This structure distinguishes the operation from traditional retail pharmacies, focusing instead on large-scale production.
A primary focus of the new facility will be sterile pharmaceutical manufacturing, specifically including injectable medications and other dosage forms. The company plans to incorporate automation and advanced manufacturing technologies to enhance efficiency and precision in its production processes. This focus on sterile drugs aims to address specific needs within the healthcare sector for high-quality, safe medication supplies.
In addition to its own manufacturing, BMK Pharma will provide contract development and manufacturing organization services. This model enables pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies to leverage BMK Pharma's production capabilities without the need to maintain their own manufacturing infrastructure. This approach is intended to streamline the drug development process for partner companies.
The expansion of domestic production capacity is a central goal of the project. BMK Pharma aims to contribute to a more reliable medication supply chain by increasing the volume of drugs produced within the United States. The company believes that enhancing local manufacturing capabilities can help improve medication availability and affordability while reducing vulnerabilities in the global supply chain.
The facility is expected to support over 100 high-skilled positions across various fields, including chemistry, engineering, automation, pharmacy, research, and pharmaceutical manufacturing. The Allen Economic Development Corporation cited the city's skilled workforce, favorable business environment, and robust local support as key factors in the company's decision to locate the project in Allen.
On October 1, company representatives joined Allen Mayor Chris Schulmeister and local economic development leaders to mark the progress of the construction site. This project aligns with Allen's broader strategy to attract advanced manufacturing and technology-focused businesses, further diversifying the city's commercial landscape.
While the company has announced a target completion date for the summer of 2027, a specific start date for manufacturing operations has not yet been determined. The project represents a notable addition to the regional industrial sector, reinforcing Allen's growing role in the pharmaceutical industry.
