Israeli forces and Civil Administration staff moved quickly on Saturday to dismantle illegally built structures and infrastructure near the northern entrance to Hebron. This aggressive step marks the latest phase of a major military operation that began just one day prior. The action follows a deadly shooting incident that claimed the lives of two soldiers, signaling a significant escalation in the region's security posture.

The trigger for this intensified activity was an attack at Yehuda Junction on Friday. In that engagement, St.-Sgt. Ron Yonatan Roytman and Sgt. Yuval Shai Svilem lost their lives. Military authorities stated that the demolitions conducted close to the shooting scene aim to enforce law and order. They also seek to remove potential security threats created by the unauthorized constructions.

The counterterrorism campaign is a coordinated effort under the command of the Judea Brigade. It involves a diverse mix of specialized units, including the Duvdevan and Maglan brigades, the Paratroopers Brigade, Givati reconnaissance reservists, and the Border Police. The Shin Bet security agency provides critical intelligence guidance to direct these operations effectively.

During the ongoing operation, troops have searched approximately 200 locations. These searches aimed to rule out the presence of weapons and active terrorist activity. As a result of this thorough combing of the area, authorities have arrested ten suspects. The focus remains on identifying any remaining threats before the operation concludes.

IDF assessments indicate that roughly 2,000 residents in the targeted area belong to the Ja'aba clan. This clan is affiliated with Hamas, the group responsible for Friday's fatal ambush. Central Command officials identified the specific attackers as Hamouda and Firas al-Ja'aba. They confirmed that both men came directly from the Ein Dir-Baha neighborhood.

On Friday evening, it became clear that the military had started evacuating the al-Jalda and Ein Dir-Baha neighborhoods. These are densely populated districts in western Hebron situated within the city's Palestinian urban area. Civilians who requested to leave were allowed to exit temporarily through designated checkpoints. These checkpoints are operated jointly by the Shin Bet and the IDF.

Officials explained that evacuating residents allows troops and Shin Bet personnel to conduct thorough searches without endangering civilians. Inspectors can examine structures, family homes, and immediate surroundings for terrorist infrastructure. They are looking for weapons, ammunition, explosives laboratories, and weapons caches. The security establishment views this area as a known center of Hamas activity in Hebron.

A situational assessment was scheduled for Saturday to determine the next steps. This meeting will decide whether to expand the current operation. Meanwhile, Brig.-Gen. Kobi Heller, commander of the IDF's West Bank Division, has already broadened arrest operations and searches. These efforts now include the Nablus, Jenin, and Tulkarm areas, as well as additional locations throughout Samaria.

These expanded military actions occur against a backdrop of growing concerns. Security officials are wary of efforts by Hamas leadership abroad to orchestrate terrorist attacks. The timing coincides with upcoming elections, adding another layer of complexity to the strategic calculations in the West Bank.
