Rumors swirling around the next James Bond have intensified in recent weeks, with several high-profile names surfacing for the iconic role. Bill Skarsgard has now stepped in to clarify his status, confirming he will not be taking over the 007 mantle. He revealed that he was never formally considered for the part in Denis Villeneuve’s planned reboot of the franchise.

On the podcast Happy Sad Confused, Skarsgard addressed the frequent speculation linking him to the character. He noted that while many actors from specific regions received attention, his name was absent from the discussions. “They didn’t call me about James Bond. I don’t know what that was about,” he stated. He added, “Every single British, Australian [actor] . but maybe they were like, We can’t do a Swede for this guy. I wasn’t even thrown into the mix.”

Recent reports have suggested that Callum Turner, Josh O'Connor, and Jack Lowden are among those being evaluated. More recent industry chatter indicates that Robert Pattinson and Nicholas Hoult have recently completed screen tests for the position. Skarsgard acknowledged the difficulty of the commitment required for the role. He agreed with host Josh Horowitz that he would not want to tie himself to the character for a decade or more.

Despite ruling out the lead role, the actor left the possibility open for a future appearance in the series. He expressed a preference for a supporting role, specifically referencing a previous performance by a fellow Swedish actor. “Just want to go in and do one Mads Mikkelsen villain,” Skarsgard said.

The actor discussed his general approach to selecting projects, admitting he lacks a rigid method. “It’s not something that I’m actively looking for, but if I feel compelled to do something, yeah,” he explained. He described the process as driven by instinct rather than a calculated strategy. “I don’t really know how to say it other than I feel drawn or compelled to,” he noted.

Skarsgard emphasized his desire to maintain that creative spark by avoiding overwork. He stated that he is willing to take extended breaks between projects to ensure the next role remains engaging. “I’ve also noticed that I don’t want to become jaded,” he said. “Which means that I think I could probably go long stretches without working and waiting for something to be compelling enough for me to work on.”

The actor has built a substantial career playing antagonists. His recent credits include Pennywise in the It films, Count Orlok in Nosferatu, Eric Draven in The Crow, and a marquis in John Wick: Chapter 4. He acknowledged that he is becoming more selective about these types of characters. “For a villain, it would have to be something that felt original to me,” he said, adding that he feels somewhat spent with familiar dark roles but remains open to new variations.
