Survey: One in Three Americans Will Borrow to Buy New Phone
A WalletHub study reveals that while most consumers view smartphones as expensive, nearly 33% believe taking on credit card debt for the latest model is a worthwhile investment.

A new WalletHub survey conducted this week indicates that 33.3% of Americans are willing to use credit cards to purchase the newest smartphone, effectively taking on debt to own the latest hardware. The data highlights a distinct contradiction in consumer behavior, as the same respondents largely view current market prices as excessive.
Nearly 90% of participants in the study stated that new phones are overpriced. This perception of high cost coexists with a strong desire to maintain a specific social image. Approximately half of those surveyed reported feeling inferior if they relied on a budget cell phone plan, suggesting that financial prudence often loses to social pressure in purchasing decisions.
John Kiernan, managing editor of WalletHub, attributed these conflicting results to the phone's role as a status symbol. Kiernan noted that many buyers are motivated by the need to present a certain image to others. He cited the survey finding that 32% of people associate always having the latest iPhone with wealth, a perception many consumers wish to project regardless of their actual financial situation.
Beyond social signaling, Kiernan explained that technological utility drives some purchases. Because modern devices perform a wide range of functions, some users feel compelled to upgrade to remain competitive in the workplace. The need to keep up with work-related technology can outweigh the initial cost burden for these individuals.
For consumers seeking to reduce expenses, Kiernan advised shoppers to compare options across different carriers. Switching providers can sometimes yield a new device along with other bundled hardware at no additional cost. He also suggested considering the model preceding the current release. While not the newest, this previous generation is often more affordable and may offer better value through bundled services.
