Jackson sophomore Carter Corrigan defeated Skyline senior Yashveer Brar in the closing meters of the District 1/2 4A Boys Cross Country Championships on Saturday at Lakewood High School in Arlington. Corrigan crossed the finish line in 15:27.3 to take first place.
The race mirrored Corrigan’s victory at the Wesco Championships one week earlier. In that event, he entered the final stretch tied for the lead and used his speed to pull away. He applied the same strategy against Brar on Saturday, staying level with the Skyline runner until the final curve of the track.
Corrigan described the moment as a repetition of the previous week’s race. He noted that he recognized Brar was not relying on a late kick, which allowed Corrigan to execute his own finish. The Jackson runner said he knew he could outkick his opponent based on their recent history.
Jackson assistant coach Marc Dugenet credited Corrigan’s decision to stay with the lead pack during the first mile. The coaching staff had planned for Corrigan to position himself for a late surge. Dugenet stated that Corrigan is a competitor who prepares specifically for these high-pressure meets and executes his plan effectively.
Corrigan’s performance represents a major improvement from the previous season. A year ago, he ran 17:17.7 to finish 53rd in the same district meet. That prior season was marked by illness and injury, though he had run 15:48.3 just over a month before those district finals. This year, focused training and recovery allowed him to maintain health and reach the podium.
Corrigan attributed his progress to daily consistency. He emphasized the importance of proper recovery and disciplined training. He said he avoided laziness and focused on building his fitness level step by step throughout the season.
Jackson’s individual success also secured a team qualification. The Timberwolves finished fourth as a school, earning one of the five available spots for the 4A State Championships in Pasco next week. Junior Logan Rusher placed 16th with a time of 16:01.5. Junior Asher Yochum placed 23rd with a time of 16:09.6. Both runners would have qualified individually had the team not already earned a spot.
Senior Jordan Schatz and freshman Maximiliano Rosas rounded out the Jackson top five. Schatz placed 54th with a time of 16:46.0. Rosas placed 58th with a time of 16:48.7. The team’s collective effort ensures Corrigan will not be running alone in the state competition.
Corrigan enters the state meet in Pasco with a clear goal: to reach the podium. He acknowledged that the field is strong and that he does not expect to win. However, he plans to use the same tactical approach that served him well in the Wesco and district races. He intends to stick with a strong group, potentially including Brar, and rely on his finishing speed to place as high as possible.
