Ordinary residents in South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, and Tasmania should prepare for severe weather this weekend. The Bureau of Meteorology has issued warnings for heavy rain, severe thunderstorms, and flash flooding in these four states. This incoming storm system will add more water to Queensland, which has already experienced a prolonged period of heavy rain.

The forecast indicates that severe thunderstorms will impact central and eastern Queensland on Saturday. Specific areas at risk include Rockhampton, Gladstone, Bundaberg, the Sunshine Coast hinterlands, and Roma. Senior Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist David Crock noted that the region is dealing with a large volume of precipitation after a very wet week. He stated, "There's plenty of rain across the south-east, as well as plenty of showers and storms and rain across much of Queensland as well, after what's already been a really wet week."

The weather pattern is unusual for October. Crock described the conditions as more typical of January or February. Several parts of Queensland received more than double their average rainfall for the month in just a few days. The Sunshine Coast hinterlands and Caboolture recorded seven-day totals between 300mm and 400mm, with some locations reaching 450mm. This accumulation resulted from moisture moving into the region over a span of seven to ten days.

The heaviest rain fell on Thursday, stretching from Caboolture to the Border Ranges. Some locations received well over 200mm in a single day. The intensity of the downpour caused flash flooding and required emergency services to respond to hundreds of calls. The Queensland fire department conducted more than 16 swift-water rescues during the event. In one incident, crews used a raft to save an elderly man who was holding onto the roof of his vehicle in Caboolture.

The storm activity will continue to move south. Parts of Victoria, including Melbourne's eastern suburbs, and central and eastern South Australia may face severe storms. In Tasmania, heavy rain is expected to develop overnight into Sunday morning. A cold front is scheduled to cross New South Wales on Sunday, bringing severe thunderstorms to the western part of the state, north-eastern Victoria, Sydney, and Brisbane.

The threat of thunderstorms will extend across eastern Australia. Crock indicated that severe storms are likely to occur through a wide portion of inland eastern Australia. This follows a week that forced the closure of several schools in Queensland due to waterlogged grounds and travel difficulties. The emergency response efforts continue as the state manages the aftermath of the extreme rainfall.

The weather system will bring additional pressure to the eastern seaboard. The Bureau of Meteorology currently has nine active flood warnings for southern Queensland. The combination of the existing saturated ground and the new cold front creates conditions for rapid flooding. Residents in the affected areas are advised to monitor local warnings as the weekend progresses.
