British comedian Russell Brand was found guilty on Thursday of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault in London. Justice Joel Bennathan, presiding over the case at Southwark Crown Court, informed the 51-year-old that the verdicts carry a consequence of a significant custodial term. Brand must remain in prison until his formal sentencing is scheduled for this Monday.
Brand had pleaded not guilty to all seven counts charged against him. He was acquitted of two counts of rape, one count of sexual assault, and one count of attempted indecent assault. The convictions stem from incidents that prosecutors argued occurred between 2004 and 2009. One victim testified that Brand anally raped her at his home in 2009 after a show. He was also convicted of grabbing a woman's breasts at a party in 2004, groping another woman at a radio station between 2004 and 2005, and pressing his face into a woman's groin while recording an advertisement in 2009.
The four-week trial saw prosecutors describe Brand as ruthless and calculating. Prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones told jurors that Brand had an indiscriminate desire for sexual contact and viewed women as a means to an end. The women who testified do not know one another. They reported the incidents to the police after a television documentary aired in Britain in 2023.
During his testimony last Wednesday, Brand admitted to being sex-obsessed during his years of fame. He described his behavior as reckless philandering and idiocy, acknowledging that he used his position to facilitate sexual access. He stated that consent is fundamental and more important than sex itself. His wife, Laura Gallacher, testified that he is a caring and wonderful father. The couple, who married in 2017 and have three children, have recently posted videos online discussing Bible verses and the trial experience.
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy of the Metropolitan Police said in a statement that Brand used his influence and fame to exploit women. Furphy added that Brand's sense of entitlement grew as his profile increased. He praised the victims for their extraordinary courage in reliving traumatic experiences under intense media scrutiny.
Brand's sentencing will take place on Monday. The maximum sentence for rape is life imprisonment, while the maximum for one count of sexual assault is ten years, according to Britain's Sentencing Council.
