A 29-year-old man remains in custody on $200,000 bail following a late-night collision that killed a local high school football player. The bond amount was set by a judge after the driver appeared in court on Saturday. Prosecutors are currently reviewing the evidence to determine the specific charges the suspect will face.
The accident happened just before 11 p.m. on Friday at the intersection of South 304th Street and Pacific Highway. Police report that two vehicles crashed into each other, causing one to slide onto the sidewalk. That car struck Dee-Jay Tuiasosopo, 16, who was walking near the scene. The intersection is located about one block from the field where Tuiasosopo had finished a football game earlier that evening.
The driver made his first appearance in court on Saturday. A judge found probable cause for his arrest based on suspicion of vehicular homicide. He was originally scheduled to return to the Kent Regional Justice Center on Monday but is now expected to appear later this week.
The King County Prosecutor’s Office announced that a formal charging decision is expected on Wednesday. This decision will determine the exact criminal counts filed against the driver in King County Superior Court.
Community members gathered at the crash site over the weekend to honor the teen. More than 100 people attended a vigil to remember Tuiasosopo, a Federal Way High School student-athlete. A memorial of candles and flowers has accumulated at the intersection since the crash.
David Rodriguez, a friend and classmate of the victim, spoke at the gathering. He described Tuiasosopo as a positive presence who kept spirits high during practices and games. Rodriguez noted that the community is turning out to celebrate the memories they shared with him. The Tuiasosopo family issued a statement thanking neighbors for their support. They described their son as someone who cared deeply for everyone he met, whether it was the first time or after years of friendship.
