The Fresno State women's basketball program has secured a talent with deep local roots and a proven track record of success.

Ryleigh Schoonover is entering her freshman season with the Bulldogs after finishing her high school career at Clovis West. She is part of a talented incoming class that the coaching staff is eager to integrate into their system. The move keeps her in the Central Valley, allowing her to continue her career close to home while stepping up to the next level of competition.

The numbers associated with her high school background tell a story of consistency. Clovis West has won the Central Section championship for 14 consecutive years. This long streak has made winning a baseline expectation for the Golden Eagles program. Coach Craig Campbell, who led the team during this era, emphasized that while they do not expect to win every single year, the goal is always to remain competitive. He noted that the team aims to knock on the door of the title every season, a mindset that has become embedded in the program's culture.

Schoonover decided to stay in the area rather than seek an opportunity elsewhere. She explained that wearing the valley V on her chest holds a unique significance that outsiders may not fully appreciate. This connection to the community adds a layer of personal meaning to her college career. She is now joining a roster that is targeting a Pac-12 championship, a significant step up from the sectional level.

Fresno State head coach Ryan McCarthy has already identified Schoonover as a standout recruit. He stated that in his opinion, she was the best player in the region for the 2026 class. McCarthy added that she proved that assessment right away upon her arrival. He noted that her time in a high school program that consistently wins has prepared her for the expectations of college basketball. He believes that because her high school team won so often, that standard of success is now what she brings to the college floor.

Schoonover credited her high school coach for preparing her for the demands of the college game. She observed that the standard of play is high at both levels. This continuity in expectations suggests that the transition from high school to college will be smoother for her than for many other players. The Bulldogs are looking for players who understand that winning is not optional, and Schoonover's background aligns perfectly with that philosophy.

The immediate stakes are set by the approaching season opener. Fresno State is set to face UC Merced in less than two weeks. This game will take place at the Save Mart Center, where Schoonover will make her college debut. The team is preparing for a challenging schedule in the Pac-12, and having a player with championship experience in the lineup provides a tactical advantage. The early games will be crucial in establishing the tone for the rest of the season.

Campbell remains confident that Schoonover has not yet reached her full potential. He believes that the Fresno State staff is excited because she is only beginning to show what she can do. He views her current performance as just the surface level of her abilities. This perspective suggests that the Bulldogs have a player who can continue to develop and contribute significantly as the season progresses.
