The Montana Grizzlies defeated Eastern Washington 42-33 at Roos Field in Cheney on Saturday, snapping a three-week losing streak with a performance defined by defensive disruption and explosive passing. The win marked a return to form for the team after a difficult stretch.
The defense led the charge by recording 11 sacks, a new single-game record for the program. Linebacker Tyler King contributed two of those sacks, extending his season total to 8.5, which leads the conference. The pressure forced three interceptions from the Eastern Washington offense.
Offense was powered by Brooks Davis, who was named both Big Sky Conference and FCS National Offensive Player of the Week. Davis caught nine passes for 231 yards and three touchdowns. His scoring plays came on runs of 75, 51, and 61 yards.
The most dramatic play of the first half occurred on the final snap. Quarterback Keali'i Ah Yat threw a Hail Mary that ricocheted off the defense and landed in Davis's hands, sealing the halftime score.
Defensive back Kade Boyd, a native of Billings, recorded his third career interception. The team also celebrated a rare moment from linebacker Zekiel Seumalo, who picked off a pass for the first time in his four years of collegiate play.
Head coach Bill Kennedy watched the pregame ritual on the bright red turf at Roos Field, an environment players often call the Inferno. The Grizzlies left Cheney with a victory and a record-breaking defensive effort.
