For seven years, the most prominent figure behind the production of the Super Bowl halftime show publicly rejected the idea of taking the stage himself. That stance ended Monday night when the NFL, Apple Music, and Roc Nation confirmed Jay-Z as the featured performer for the game on Feb. 14 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

The announcement followed days of speculation and coincided with the conclusion of Jay-Z’s "Jay-Z 30" concert tour. The tour began with three shows at Yankee Stadium in New York, continued in London, and concluded in Southern California over the weekend. The official announcement included a short video of the rapper sitting inside SoFi Stadium surrounded by goats, accompanied by the caption "GOAT's out of the bag."

Jay-Z’s connection to the event is professional as much as it is personal. His company, Roc Nation, has partnered with the NFL since 2019 to advise on and help produce the league's entertainment presentations. When the partnership began, Jay-Z told NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, "If this is about me performing at the Super Bowl, then we can just end this conversation now."

Now, seven years later, the arrangement has shifted from behind-the-scenes consultation to front-of-stage performance. Since Jay-Z’s initial refusal, the halftime slot has been occupied by artists including Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar, and The Weeknd.

Born Shawn Carter, Jay-Z holds 25 Grammy Awards and has received 89 nominations, the second-highest total in history behind his wife, Beyoncé. His catalog spans albums such as "Reasonable Doubt," "The Blueprint," and "The Black Album," alongside hits like "99 Problems" and "Empire State of Mind." His 1996 debut, "Reasonable Doubt," was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame last year.

Beyond recording, Jay-Z has built Roc Nation into a major entertainment firm managing artists and athletes. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2017 as the first rapper to receive the honor and joined the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021. The performance will mark his first solo Super Bowl appearance, following two shows by Beyoncé.

The announcement lands as streaming metrics for major halftime performers continue to spike. For context, after Bad Bunny’s 2025 performance, he held the top six spots on Spotify’s Top 50 U.S. chart the next morning, with another song at No. 8 and eleven other titles in the top 50.
