Spotify has introduced a strict new verification step for users on shared subscriptions. To retain access to Duo and Family plans, members must now physically scan a QR code on the device of the plan manager. This requirement applies to all current subscribers of these multi-user tiers.

The window to complete the verification is seven days. If a member fails to scan the address-verification code within that timeframe, Spotify will automatically move the account to the free tier. Additionally, the user will be blocked from joining any other Duo or Family plan for a period of 12 months.

The policy change follows user reports on Reddit describing the sudden appearance of QR code prompts. Spotify’s support documentation now confirms the new enforcement protocol. The company is applying this measure to its existing rule that all members of a shared plan must live at the same address.

The crackdown targets a gap between written rules and practical application. While the same-address requirement is standard, it creates complications for households where members do not live together. This includes children attending college in different cities or spouses who travel frequently for work. Relatives living apart may now find their access challenged despite following the spirit of the plan.

Financial analysts have long identified this area as a source of lost revenue. In a report dated October 15 titled "Music in the Air: 10 Years On," Goldman Sachs estimated that a meaningful share of family plan users are not actual household members. They noted that friends often share plans to reduce individual costs, creating a monetization opportunity for the platform.

The report stated that tightening household verification offers additional upside for Spotify. It observed that while most plans require co-residency, enforcement had previously been minimal in practice. The new QR code step represents a direct move to close that enforcement gap. Users who miss the seven-day deadline will lose premium access immediately upon the cutoff.
