Kenneth Walker called the Kansas City Chiefs' performance 'terrible' after falling 20-3 to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday Night Football.
The loss marked a sharp turn for the running back, who entered the game on a 2,000-yard rushing pace. Seattle defenders limited Walker to 14 carries for 36 yards, a far cry from his early-season form. He described the team's effort as needing improvement in 'everything' during a brief locker room interview.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes accepted responsibility for the stalled offense, noting that the team failed to use play-action passes to open up the field for Walker. The Chiefs were shorthanded, missing both starting tackles and two top receivers. Mahomes acknowledged that his footwork was off in the first half as he drifted out of clean pockets.
Statistical records reflect the magnitude of the struggle. According to Next Gen Stats, the Chiefs were held without a touchdown for only the second time in a full game during Mahomes' ten-year career. The team recorded just 11 first downs, the lowest total in a Mahomes start, while scoring three points, a team-low for the era.
The defensive unit also faced scrutiny after the Seahawks converted 11 of 16 third-down attempts. That total ties for Seattle's second-most successful third downs in a game since tracking began in 1991. Kicker Harrison Butker added to the frustration by missing two field goal attempts, one short and one wide right.
Coach Andy Reid stated that he takes full responsibility for the struggles across all three phases. The team now faces a difficult schedule with five of their next seven games on the road. They play the Denver Broncos next week before facing the Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Rams later in the season.
Walker, who won his previous 15 games spanning his time in Seattle and Kansas City, said the Seahawks outplayed the Chiefs. He noted that the emotional weight of the loss would be felt on the plane ride home, but the team must use it as a building block.
