Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva secured a fourth non-consecutive term in office on Sunday after defeating Senator Flavio Bolsonaro in the presidential runoff. The Superior Electoral Court confirmed the result late on Sunday night, ending a tight contest between the two candidates.

Official figures show Lula captured 51.78 percent of valid votes, while Flavio Bolsonaro received 48.22 percent. The narrow margin reflects a closely divided electorate in the country's most populous democracy. The vote count was finalized after delays that affected polling stations across the nation.

Heavy rain and technical issues disrupted the voting process, causing polls to remain open for two hours past their scheduled 7 p.m. local time closing. The Supreme Court approved the extension, a decision that has since become a focal point for the losing side. Both campaigns reportedly requested the extra time due to downpours and transport problems that hindered voter access.

Flavio Bolsonaro announced he would challenge the outcome, citing the extension as an arbitrary change to the rules. "We will engage our legal team and seek to have these elections annulled," he said. He added that he would not accept the rules being changed by "Lula's friends on the Federal Supreme Court." His stance contrasts with reports that his own team also advocated for the delay.

The victory marks a first in modern Brazilian history, as Lula became the first candidate to lose the initial round of voting and win the second. His success counters a regional shift toward right-wing governance in Latin America. He is scheduled to begin his new term on 5 January 2027.

Lula’s political platform emphasizes cooperation with emerging economies, poverty reduction, and environmental protection. He has historically criticized the United States and Israel, advocating for Palestinian statehood and stronger ties with China and Iran. In a speech to supporters, he pledged to work 24 hours a day to improve the country and declared, "Brazil is no one's back yard."
