Motorists in Montana paid less at the pump this week. The state's average gasoline price fell for the sixth consecutive week, marking the second such streak in 2026.

The average cost of a gallon of gasoline in Montana is now $4.28. That figure represents a drop of 7.7 cents from the previous week. Compared to one month ago, prices are 19.6 cents lower. However, drivers are still paying $1.28 more per gallon than they did a year ago.

Local prices in Missoula vary by location. On Monday morning, two stations at the corner of Reserve and Mullan charged $4.24. That price is 5 cents lower than the rate at the same locations last week. Two stations at the intersection of South Avenue and Reserve Street charged higher rates of $4.29 and $4.38. A different station on Reserve Street charged $4.27, a decrease of 21 cents from the prior week.

The spread between the cheapest and most expensive fuel in the state remains wide. The lowest price recorded in Montana yesterday was $3.85 per gallon. The highest price was $4.99 per gallon. Montana currently ranks 16th in the nation for average gas prices, the same position it held last week.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, provided the national data. The national average gasoline price fell 17.1 cents last week to reach $4.12 per gallon. That is 24.7 cents lower than the price one month ago. The national average is $1.13 higher than a year ago. The average diesel price decreased by 5.9 cents to $6.28 per gallon.

De Haan attributes the decline to wrapping refinery maintenance and fading seasonal demand as cooler weather arrives. He noted that oil prices fell nearly $2 during Sunday trading. WTI crude stood at $102.15 per barrel, while Brent crude was $111.52 per barrel. He said volatility could return quickly after the election, with prices influenced by activity around the Strait of Hormuz and Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries.
