Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said his country has a plan if Viktor Orbán becomes UN secretary-general.

Sybiha commented on reports that the US administration is pushing the former Hungarian prime minister for the post. He said he is confident Orbán would use the veto power and blackmail skills he developed while derailing EU decisions.

The minister referenced an incident from late 2023. At that time, Orbán left an EU summit meeting room. This allowed leaders to approve opening accession talks with Ukraine without a Hungarian veto.

Sybiha wrote that Ukraine can share its experience of taking Orbán out for coffee at the right moment. He framed the tactic as a way to manage the potential UN chief.

The Wall Street Journal reported the US is promoting Orbán for the role with support from China and Russia. In May, journalists said MAGA figures considered a UN appointment as a shield for Orbán against prosecution in Hungary. Investigative journalist Szabolcs Panyi stated Orbán is preparing to move to the US if legal action begins.
