Three men were taken into custody in Jordan’s Karak governorate following a dawn operation on Monday. All three suspects sustained injuries during the arrest. No members of the security forces were hurt in the engagement.
The arrests follow an attack on a Greek Orthodox church in the village of Hammoud. The shooting occurred on Friday during a funeral service. Initial reports indicated that three individuals participated in the assault.
Mazen Al-Faraya, Jordan’s Interior Minister, confirmed that the three men taken into custody are responsible for the incident. In a phone interview with state television station Al-Mamlaka, Al-Faraya stated that the security services fulfilled their duties by capturing the perpetrators. He described the men as putting up fierce resistance before being subdued.
Al-Faraya noted that the three individuals were identified early in the investigation. He said security services used all available means to apprehend them. The suspects suffered severe injuries during the capture.
The Public Security Directorate issued a statement saying that the suspects met their just fate. The agency noted that terrorism has no place in the country. The directorate did not name the suspects or link them to any specific Islamist militant groups.
King Abdullah II directed authorities to respond with an iron fist against the outlaws of Islam. The monarch asked officials to target anyone attempting to undermine the unity of the Jordanian people. No armed group has claimed responsibility for the Friday attack.
