Alaska Air Group notified 200 employees of their termination on Friday morning. The company specifically targeted its non-contract workforce as it attempts to stabilize operations during a difficult financial period.
The decision follows a forecast released to investors. Alaska Air Group projected an adjusted loss between $2 and $2.50 per share for the fourth quarter. This figure significantly exceeds the $1.04 per share loss estimated by LSEG data, indicating a sharper downturn than analysts had predicted.
Company executives attributed the layoffs to volatile market conditions. They cited unpredictable fuel costs and geopolitical pressures as the primary drivers for the need to reduce overhead. These factors have squeezed margins across the aviation industry in recent months.
Washington state bears the largest share of the reduction. Of the 200 positions cut, 125 are located in the state. The remaining roles are distributed across other parts of the company’s operational footprint.
In a written statement, Alaska Air Group expressed gratitude for the contributions of the departing staff. "We recognize the impact these decisions have on our employees and their families, and we are deeply grateful for the contributions they have made to get Alaska Air Group to where we are today," the company wrote.
The carrier stated it would provide support to affected workers during the transition period. The announcement marks the latest move by the airline to align its staffing levels with expected revenue.
