OpenAI Chases Record-Breaking Valuation

The AI giant is reportedly finalizing a massive private funding round that could push its worth past the trillion-dollar mark before any public listing.

OpenAI appears poised to rewrite the playbook for corporate valuation as it moves to close a historic private funding round. Rather than rushing to a public listing, the artificial intelligence lab is reportedly working toward securing up to $30 billion in new capital. The deal, which would value the company at $1.25 trillion on a pre-money basis, signals a significant shift in strategy as the firm balances the benefits of public markets against the flexibility of private equity.

Sources indicate that the round is being led by investment firm Coatue, alongside investors from the United Arab Emirates. While terms are still under negotiation and remain subject to change, the structure of the deal may include more than just cash. Reports suggest the UAE funding could be tied to a separate agreement securing additional computing capacity for OpenAI, a critical resource in the competitive AI landscape.

This development follows an earlier report from a month ago, which estimated the company was targeting a slightly higher valuation of $1.4 trillion for a similar raise. Despite the shift in numbers, the core narrative remains consistent: OpenAI is positioning itself for a valuation that would make it the most valuable private company in history. The firm has declined to comment on the specific details of the ongoing negotiations.

The financial stakes are high, with this potential raise setting the stage for a future initial public offering. OpenAI filed confidential paperwork for an IPO in June, just after its previous funding round in March valued the ChatGPT developer at $852 billion on a post-money basis. A successful close at the new trillion-plus level would significantly raise the bar for what investors expect during its eventual public debut.

The move also sends ripples through the broader AI industry, particularly to rival Anthropic. Many observers believe Anthropic is closer to materializing its own public offering, with rumors suggesting its S-1 filing could appear at any time. According to recent reports, Anthropic is seeking a valuation between $1.5 and $2 trillion for its public launch.

Anthropic recently raised $65 billion in May, a move that valued the company at $965 billion and was widely viewed as its final major private round before hitting the stock market. Like OpenAI, it also filed confidential IPO paperwork in June. As both giants prepare for their respective public journeys, the current funding maneuvers by OpenAI underscore the escalating financial arms race defining the sector in late 2026.
