Barcelona will host Real Madrid this Sunday in a fixture that could settle a rivalry spanning more than 120 years. The two clubs are currently tied with 106 victories each in their head-to-head record. A result on Sunday will give one side the lead in this historic matchup for the first time in a long period.

The rivalry began in 1902 and has since featured some of the most recognizable names in football. Early matches included David Beckham and Zinedine Zidane, while later eras brought Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar Jr, and Luis Suarez. The current generation features Lamine Yamal and Raphinha for Barcelona, and Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, and Vinicius Jr for Real Madrid.

Several past encounters defined the intensity of this rivalry. On April 23, 2017, Barcelona won 3-2 at the Santiago Bernabeu. Messi scored his 500th goal for the club in the final minutes, securing the win after Sergio Ramos was sent off. That victory briefly put Barcelona at the top of the La Liga table, though Real Madrid finished the season with the title.

Another memorable game occurred on March 10, 2007, at Camp Nou. A 19-year-old Messi scored three goals in a 3-3 draw, rescuing a point for Barcelona while they played with ten men. Ruud van Nistelrooy scored twice for Real Madrid, and Sergio Ramos added a third. Both teams finished that season with 76 points, with Real Madrid claiming the title based on head-to-head record.

Real Madrid dominated a 4-2 home victory on April 10, 2005, featuring stars like Zinedine Zidane and Raul. Michael Owen scored the winning goal in the 65th minute. Barcelona's Samuel Eto'o and Ronaldinho found the net, but the visitors still won the league that year by three points.

The largest margin of victory in recent memory came on May 2, 2009, when Barcelona won 6-2 at the Bernabeu. Thierry Henry scored two goals, and Messi, Carles Puyol, and Gerard Pique also contributed to the rout. That performance helped Barcelona win the league by a nine-point margin.

The rivalry also extended to cup competitions. In the Copa del Rey final on April 20, 2011, Real Madrid defeated Barcelona 1-0 in extra time. Cristiano Ronaldo headed the only goal from a pass by Angel Di Maria. It was Real Madrid's first trophy under manager Jose Mourinho and their first domestic cup since 1993.
