New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson told reporters on Wednesday that he prefers to remain in the Big Apple, even as the team struggles with its losing streak. Wilson spoke at the facility in Florham Park, New Jersey, addressing questions about his future and his current role in the offense. He stated that his desire to win games outweighs his love for the city.
"I want to be here, man," Wilson said. "I want to win games and that's the one thing we've been missing on here. I love it here. Do I love it more than I love winning? Nah, to be completely honest, but I'm hopeful." The comments come amid speculation that he might seek a trade before the deadline.
Wilson showed visible frustration on the sideline during the fourth quarter of the Jets' 28-25 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. He was targeted just three times in that game, catching two passes for 26 yards. The previous week, he did not factor into the offense during a loss to the New England Patriots.
The Nov. 10 trade deadline has intensified rumors about a potential move. Wilson signed a four-year, $130 million contract extension with the Jets 15 months ago, which runs through 2030. The team previously traded cornerback Sauce Gardner at the last deadline, but there is no sign they are looking to move Wilson. He is 26 years old and leads the Jets with 37 receptions and 444 yards this season.
Wilson acknowledged that his limited opportunities contribute to his irritation. "Throughout my experience, when things go right, I tend to have a part in that," he said. "And when it doesn't, it seems avoidable." He clarified that his visible anger is driven by a desire to help the team and not a desire to leave immediately.
The Jets are 24-41 since selecting Wilson with the No. 10 pick in 2022. They are 2-5 this season and will host the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. Coach Aaron Glenn, offensive coordinator Frank Reich, and quarterback Geno Smith have all stated they intend to throw Wilson the ball early and often.
Smith said he is looking to get Wilson the football as much as possible but must remain mindful of defensive schemes. Coaches have noted that Wilson draws extra coverage, which creates opportunities for other receivers. Wilson pushed back on the idea that defenses are using special tactics to take him away, saying he would not call it "Houdini or a superpower." He said he enjoys seeing other receivers succeed and wants them to "earn their flowers," but he believes defenses still must account for him.
Cornerback Nahshon Wright is also seeking more playing time. Wright, who recorded five interceptions for the Chicago Bears last season, has not played a defensive snap this year. He signed a one-year, $3.5 million fully guaranteed contract expecting to compete for a start. He missed camp time with an injury and lost the job to Azareye'h Thomas. Wright said he is "definitely frustrated" and told reporters, "I'm open to anything at this point. I just want to go where I can play, whether it's here or somewhere else."
