The Seattle Sounders lost 1-0 to the Houston Dynamo on Wednesday night at Lumen Field.
Lucas Halter scored his first career MLS goal in the 26th minute to secure the victory for Houston.
This result marks the first time the Dynamo have defeated the Sounders in Seattle, snapping an 18-match losing streak in that venue.
Prior to Wednesday, the Sounders had recorded 13 wins and four draws against Houston in MLS play at Lumen Field.
The Sounders controlled the match statistically, outshooting the Dynamo 21-2 for the game.
Seattle held a 70-30 possession advantage and outshot Houston 8-1 in the first half.
However, the Dynamo goalkeeper Jonathan Bond made four saves for Houston, including two stops against Jesús Ferreira and Albert Rusnák in the 41st minute.
Halter's goal came from a corner kick by Mateusz Bogusz.
Dejan Joveljić and Sebastian Gomez missed defensive headers on the set piece.
Halter headed the ball off a bounce past Sounders goalkeeper Andrew Thomas to take the lead.
Houston maintained a defensive posture in the second half, limiting Seattle to chances from wide areas.
Paul Arriola made a key defensive play after substituting in at halftime to break up a passing lane from Bogusz to a charging attacker on the right side of the field. This move prevented a high-quality chance for the Dynamo to extend their lead. Jackson Ragen also had a header chance off a corner kick in stoppage time that went wide, allowing Houston to carry their 1-0 advantage into the break. The Sounders attempted five shots in the final four minutes of stoppage time, but none found the target. Jordan Morris had a header float over the bar just before the final whistle. The loss dropped the Sounders out of the seventh seed in the playoff race. The Colorado Rapids moved into that position via a tiebreaker after drawing 2-2 with the San Jose Earthquakes. The Sounders now sit in ninth place, one point ahead of Real Salt Lake in tenth. Los Angeles Galaxy sits in 10th, two points behind Seattle. The top nine teams in the conference qualify for the postseason. The bottom two seeds will play a single elimination game to determine the final spot in the eight-team bracket. The Sounders are scheduled to play the Vancouver Whitecaps on Sunday at BC Place. Vancouver holds the top seed in the Western Conference. The regular season concludes for Seattle with a home game against LAFC on Saturday, November 7.
