Voters in Oregon and Southwest Washington must submit ballots by 8 p.m. Tuesday to participate in a midterm election where turnout is already outpacing the 2022 cycle.

The voting deadline lands on Tuesday, November 3. This deadline allows residents in these specific regions to cast votes for contests that will determine state leadership and a pivotal seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Oregon Democrats are running to keep their supermajority in the state Legislature and to retain the governor’s office. The state’s top race features a rematch between incumbents and challengers, according to OPB politics reporter Bryce Dole.

In Southwest Washington, a single congressional race carries national weight. The outcome of that district could decide which party controls the House. Democrats are predicting a surge of blue votes, while Republicans aim to hold their majority despite President Trump’s low approval ratings.

Nationwide, the race for House control is tight. The GOP is fighting to maintain its legislative grip, but Democrats point to the president’s unpopularity as a tailwind for their candidates.

Election officials in Oregon are preparing for a heavy volume of ballots. Tillamook County Clerk Christy Nyseth is among the nonpartisan administrators gearing up for the day. Her team works to ensure the process runs smoothly for the estimated high turnout.

The high anticipation for these elections contrasts with the quiet routines of other local events. In Portland, residents attended a Day of the Dead celebration on Sunday. Dozens of families dressed in traditional attire to honor the holiday, extending the festivities into the afternoon after Halloween.

In animal health news, the Oregon Zoo’s baby elephant Tula-Tu has contracted elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus. Dr. Carlos Sanchez, the zoo’s director of animal health, confirmed the animal remains stable. The virus is a known threat to young elephants, requiring close monitoring.

The election day timeline is firm for the Pacific Northwest. No extensions are mentioned for the 8 p.m. Tuesday cutoff. Voters in the specified regions of Oregon and Southwest Washington have until that time to ensure their ballots are received.

The 2026 midterm results will shape the balance of power in both state and federal legislatures. The specific numbers from the previous 2022 midterm serve as the baseline for this year’s increased participation.
