A recount in Montana’s House District 57 race resulted in a final margin of 17 votes.
Scott Rosenzweig secured the victory with 3,802 votes against 3,785 for Marty Malone. The original count showed Rosenzweig ahead by 20 votes. The recount process reduced that gap by three votes.
Legislative recounts are uncommon in the state. District 57 was the only legislative race to require a recount in 2024. It marked the eighth such instance in the state since the year 2000. The narrow outcome occurred in a district where every ballot counted toward the final result.
Statewide turnout data from the November 5, 2024, general election shows that 612,423 ballots were cast. The state had 799,849 registered voters at the time. That figure represents a 76.57% turnout rate. Approximately one in four registered voters did not submit a ballot in that election.
Families in the state are using these close results to discuss the electoral process with children. One parent described bringing a young son to voting events since his birth. The family reviews candidate information and debates issues together before casting ballots. The parent stated that the goal is for the child to view voting as a standard community activity.
The family explains their choices to the child and answers his questions. They do not expect the child to agree with every political decision. The parent described voting as both a right and a privilege that requires thought and effort. The family aims to make the process familiar before the child is old enough to vote independently.
