The Wisconsin men's tennis team remains without a victory away from home this season. The Badgers finished the weekend with a split result, improving their overall record to 6-6. They are currently 0-1 in Big Ten play.
Wisconsin dominated its Friday afternoon match at Nielsen Tennis Center in Madison. The Badgers defeated Pennsylvania, which was 4-7, by a score of 6-1. This marked the first time in program history that Wisconsin beat the Quakers. The previous meeting ended in a 4-3 loss for the Badgers last year.
The home team secured the doubles point early. Senior Josef Dodridge and junior Osgar O'Hoisin won 6-1, maintaining their unbeaten record as a pair. Sophomores Daniel Soyfer and Chase Colton added a 6-2 win. In singles, Colton, Soyfer, Dodridge, and freshman Jesper Freimuth all won in straight sets. Freimuth recorded a 6-2, 6-3 victory. O'Hoisin required three sets, closing out his match 7-5, 4-6, 10-2.
The team then traveled to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, to face Middle Tennessee State. The Blue Raiders, who are 10-2, had not lost at home this season. Wisconsin won the doubles point, with O'Hoisin and Dodridge beating Chris Edge and Tom Moonen 6-4. Senior Chema Carranza and Freimuth followed with a 6-2 win over Glan Issa and Jan Porteset.
Soyfer opened the singles slate with a 6-4, 6-3 victory, extending his season singles record to 10-0. Middle Tennessee State then won the next three matches to take a 3-2 lead. Dodridge tied the score at 3-3 with a 7-6, 6-1 win. The match came down to the final point between Carranza and No. 2 seed Tom Moonen.
Carranza lost the first set 7-6 and won the second 6-1. In the deciding set, he held a 5-4 lead. Moonen closed the set 7-5 to give the Blue Raiders the win. Head coach Danny Westerman acknowledged the difficulty of the loss. "This one stings. We need to keep working," Westerman told UWBadgers.com. "We put ourselves in these situations so we can eventually get over the hump."
Wisconsin returns to Nielsen Tennis Center next weekend. The team is scheduled for a Sunday doubleheader against Cornell and UW-Green Bay.
